Martha was born in March 1860 in Westhoughton and her baptism took place on June 3rd, 1860 at St. Bartholomew (Westhoughton).1 2  Martha's father was Edward Mather and her mother was Elizabeth (Betty) Holland.  Her paternal grandparents were Geffrey (Jeffery) Mather and Catherine Gregory. She had a brother named John.  She was the younger of the two known children. She had five half-brothers and two half-sisters, named John, James, Joseph, Thomas, William, Eliza and Betsy.
