Mary, known as Polly, was born in 1882 in Atherton.1   Polly's father was Peter Shaw and her mother was Elizabeth Ann Metcalfe. She had two brothers and seven sisters, named Jack, Warren, Eliza, Jessie, Annie, Emma, Elsie, Winnie and Gertie.  She was the second oldest of the ten children.
