Winnie was born in 1898 in Atherton.1   Winnie's father was Peter Shaw and her mother was Elizabeth Ann Metcalfe. She had two brothers and seven sisters, named Jack, Warren, Eliza, Polly, Jessie, Annie, Emma, Elsie and Gertie.  She was the second youngest of the ten children.
