Eliza was born in 1881 in Chowbent.1  Eliza's father was Peter Shaw and her mother was Elizabeth Ann Metcalfe. She had two brothers and seven sisters, named Jack, Warren, Polly, Jessie, Annie, Emma, Elsie, Winnie and Gertie.  She was the oldest of the ten children.
