Warren was born in September 1892 in Atherton.1  Warren's father was Peter Shaw and his mother was Elizabeth Ann Metcalfe. He had a brother and eight sisters, named Jack, Eliza, Polly, Jessie, Annie, Emma, Elsie, Winnie and Gertie.  He was the third youngest of the ten children.
