Gertrude, known as Gertie, was born on October 22nd, 1899 in Atherton.1  Gertie's father was Peter Shaw and her mother was Elizabeth Ann Metcalfe. She had two brothers and seven sisters, named Jack, Warren, Eliza, Polly, Jessie, Annie, Emma, Elsie and Winnie.  She was the youngest of the ten children.
