Mary was born in December 1840 in Westhoughton.1  Mary's father was Richard Mather and her mother was Mary Leigh.  Her paternal grandparents were Edward Mather and Ruth Gregory. She had two brothers and two sisters, named John, Edward, Ann and Ruth.  She was the second youngest of the five children.  She died at the age of 3 in July 1844 in Westhoughton.  She was buried on July 16th, 1844 at St. Bartholomew (Westhoughton).2
