Edward's father was Richard Mather and his mother was Mary Leigh. His paternal grandparents were Edward Mather and Ruth Gregory. He had a brother and three sisters, named John, Ann, Mary and Ruth. He was the third oldest of the five children. He died as an infant in October 1839 in Westhoughton. His burial was on November 2nd, 1839 at St. Bartholomew (Westhoughton).²
