Ellen's father was Joseph Mather and her mother was Jane (Ann) Smith.  Her paternal grandparents were Geffrey (Jeffery) Mather and Catherine Gregory. She had two brothers and five sisters, named Thomas, Jeffrey, Catherine, Alice, Ann, Alice and Mary.  She was the third youngest of the eight children.  She died at the age of 2 in December 1861 in Westhoughton.¹
