Catherine was born in June 1847 in Westhoughton and her baptism took place on August 3rd, 1847 at St. Bartholomew (Westhoughton).1  Catherine's father was Joseph Mather and her mother was Jane (Ann) Smith.  Her paternal grandparents were Geffrey (Jeffery) Mather and Catherine Gregory. She had two brothers and five sisters, named Thomas, Jeffrey, Alice, Ann, Alice, Ellen and Mary.  She was the oldest of the eight children.
