Mary's father was Joseph Mather and her mother was Jane (Ann) Smith.  Her paternal grandparents were Geffrey (Jeffery) Mather and Catherine Gregory. She had two brothers and five sisters, named Thomas, Jeffrey, Catherine, Alice, Ann, Alice and Ellen.  She was the second youngest of the eight children.  She died at the age of 3 in March 1865 in Westhoughton.¹
