Thomas was born in 1852 in Westhoughton and his baptism took place on April 11th, 1852 at St. Bartholomew (Westhoughton).1  Thomas' father was Joseph Mather and his mother was Jane (Ann) Smith.  His paternal grandparents were Geffrey (Jeffery) Mather and Catherine Gregory. He had a brother and six sisters, named Jeffrey, Catherine, Alice, Ann, Alice, Ellen and Mary.  He was the third oldest of the eight children.
