Jeffrey's father was Joseph Mather and his mother was Jane (Ann) Smith. His paternal grandparents were Geffrey (Jeffery) Mather and Catherine Gregory. He had a brother and six sisters, named Thomas, Catherine, Alice, Ann, Alice, Ellen and Mary. He was the youngest of the eight children. He died at the age of 54 in 1918 in Darwen.
