Joseph was born in 1821 in Westhoughton.1 Joseph's father was Geffrey (Jeffery) Mather and his mother was Catherine Gregory. His paternal grandparents were William Mather and Mary Green. He had three brothers and five sisters, named William, John, Edward, Ellen, Ellen, Alice, Ann and Mary.General Notes
Joseph married Jane in April 1847 and yet when Catherine was baptised the parents were Joseph and Anne. Joseph also recorded his wife Anne in 1851, with both daughters Catherine (4) and Alice (1) present.
It appears Anne and Jane are the same person, same age, silk weaver. Probably the name have been mis-read as Jane and Anne appear very similar on these records. All the childrens birth records show the mother's maiden name as SMITH.
