Ellen was born in 1824 in Westhoughton and her baptism took place on April 11th, 1824 at St. Bartholomew (Westhoughton).1  Ellen's father was Geffrey (Jeffery) Mather and her mother was Catherine Gregory.  Her paternal grandparents were William Mather and Mary Green. She had four brothers and four sisters, named William, Joseph, John, Edward, Ellen, Alice, Ann and Mary.  Ellen and Alice were twins.
