John Mather

John was born in March 1826 in Westhoughton and his christening took place on March 26th, 1826 at St. Mary (Deane).¹

John's father was Geffrey (Jeffery) Mather and his mother was Catherine Gregory. His paternal grandparents were William Mather and Mary Green. He had three brothers and five sisters, named William, Joseph, Edward, Ellen, Ellen, Alice, Ann and Mary. He died at the age of 43 in June 1869 R Rumworth. His burial was on June 10th, 1869 at St. Mary (Deane).²

General Notes
- In 1841, John Mather (15, M.S. for William Gill, a farmer) was the only other Mather in Rumworth in 1841 (other than James Mather b.1792, Hall'ith Wood).
  
  In 1851, John, aged 25, was an Ag. Lab at Bridge Hill Farm, Heaton, working for Richard (29, Head) and Mary Hough. Betty Edge was their servant girl, just 15.
  
  NOTE: There is another older John Mather from Tyldesley, son of Jeffery, who married Alice Knnton at Manchester in 1836.
  
  Things happened, and John and Betty had to quickly get married on 19 June 1853. Their daughter Catherine E Mather was born the same year.
  
  In 1861 John and Betty Mather (35 & 25) with Catherine (8), Edward (6), Mary (3) and Elizabeth (8mo) at Rumworth (births registered at Little Hulton)
  
  In 1879, John was a Forge Man when son Edward of Deane village married Elizabeth Howcroft.

      Cornelius Buckley was recorded as living here in 1838 when he married Esther Scowcroft.
      
      John Mather recorded Crook St as his address in 1838 when his son Benjamin was born and again in 1842 when his wife Ellen (John and Mary's daughter) died.
      
      By 1851, except for Mary, their children had left home and they had 9 lodgers and visitors to fill what must have been a big house.
