Ellen was born on February 23rd, 1816 in Bolton and her baptism took place on February 23rd, 1816 at Moor Lane Baptist.¹²

Birth Notes
- On the 1841 census, Ellen was aged 20 (which is rounded to 5 years), so was between 15 and 25 (i.e. born 1816 to 1826).
  
  The marriage certificate of Ellen and John has Ellen of "Full Age", and John and "Minor", but the 1841 census shows John older then Ellen. However the Baptism record does suggest she was born about 1816, so of same age, so born before 9 Oct 1816 (i.e. 21 when married)
  
  Ellen was living in Halliwell in 1837, and we only know she was born somewhere in Lancashire (probably East Bolton) from the 1841 census.

Ellen's father was John Buckley and her mother was Mary Crook. Her paternal grandparents were Benjamin Buckley and Sarah Ogden; her maternal grandparents were John Crook and Rachel Kay. She had three brothers and two sisters, named Cornelius, Jonathan, Benjamin, Sarah and Mary. She was the fifth oldest of the six children. She died due to a medical problem, Fever of the Brain, at the age of 26 on September 6th, 1842 in Bolton.³

- Died between 1841-42. Lancashire BMD has Ellen died in East Bolton, in 1842, aged 26. The others ages dont match.

  Death recorded in Great Bolton (Eastern Bolton). Age 26. Husband John Mather, and Oil Cloth Maker, was in attendance at Crook Street, Great Bolton. The death was recorded on 8-Sep-1842 by John Scowcroft, Registrar.
  
  Ellen was not buried at St Peters or Tonge, so possibly at St Stephen and all Martyrs, Darcy Lever (where brother Cornelius is buried).
  
  The Manchester times reported Ellen's death (Sat 17 Sep 1842 edition): "DIED: - On the 7th instant, aged 26 years, Mrs Ellen Mather, of Crook-street, Great Bolton".

General Notes
- Ellen Buckley married John Mather in Deane, Bolton in 1837 with witness Lomas Mather. Soon after, she had a son Benjamin, named after her close brother, but the child died aged 2.
  
  In 1841, Ellen and John were living together with son, Joseph at Blackburn Street, Little Bolton. Ellen Buckley was recorded from Lancashire, probably Halliwell where she was living before her marriage.
  
  The Manchester times reported Ellen's death: "DIED: - On the 7th instant, aged 26 years, Mrs Ellen Mather, of Crook-street, Great Bolton".
  
  John was a Widower when he married Elizabeth in 1843, so Ellen died in 1841/2. There are four recorded deaths for Ellen Mather over this period (3 in 1841, 1 in 1842) in Bolton. Ages were not indexed at this time, so cannot easily confirm which one, but clearly the certificate for Sep 1842 shows John as an oil cloth maker, so this must be the one.

    - Happy Mather was recorded at Blackburn St in the 1811 L.B. Poor Rates Book, so presumably James had just died when Happy got recorded (as head of household). Home of John, Ellen and Son Joseph in 1841.
