Mary was born on November 3rd, 1813 in Bolton and her baptism took place on November 3rd, 1813 at Moor Lane Baptist.¹²

Mary's father was John Buckley and her mother was Mary Crook. Her paternal grandparents were Benjamin Buckley and Sarah Ogden; her maternal grandparents were John Crook and Rachel Kay. She had three brothers and two sisters, named Cornelius, Jonathan, Benjamin, Sarah and Ellen. She was the fourth oldest of the six children. She died at the age of 78 in February 1892 in Ashton-under-Lyne.³

  There are no Mary Buckley GRO deaths registered at Bolton with a good age match. The closeset match is Q3 1883, aged 74.
  
  Younger brother Benjamin moved to Ashton, so Mary may have followed him there. There are several possible deaths registered there.

General Notes
- In 1841, Mary was 25, F.S., the oldest sibling, with her parents and family at Crook Street, Bolton.
  
  In 1851, Mary (37) was unmarried with her parents John and Mary Buckley (75 & 70) at 34 Crook Street, Bolton.
  
  In 1861, after both parents had died, Mary (48) was one of five servants at Crupsall for Robert Frost, a farmer of 65 acres.
  
  Between 1861 and 1871, there are over 100 Mary Buckley marriages in Lancashire, but only one in Bolton in 1862 to Thomas Shaw, which seems likely as it is a civil marriage (not indexed on Lanc-OPC). However there are no further supporting documens (census or death). She may have died a spinster.

      Cornelius Buckley was recorded as living here in 1838 when he married Esther Scowcroft.
      
      John Mather recorded Crook St as his address in 1838 when his son Benjamin was born and again in 1842 when his wife Ellen (John and Mary's daughter) died.
      
      By 1851, except for Mary, their children had left home and they had 9 lodgers and visitors to fill what must have been a big house.
