William was born in 1807 in Westhoughton.  William's father was Adam Hodkinson and his mother was Mary Mather.  His maternal grandparents were Robert Mather and Jane (Jenny) Sale. He had a brother and four sisters, named Adam, Catherine, Ann, Mary and Margaret.  He was the oldest of the six known children.

‌William and Rachel were married in a religious ceremony on April 14th, 1833 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Leigh).  They had a son named Adam.  There are possibly more children.
