Sarah was born in 1839 in Westhoughton.1  Sarah's father was William Turner and her mother was Martha Mather.  Her paternal grandparents were Isaac Turner and Ann Mather; her maternal grandparents were Edward Mather and Ruth Gregory. She had three brothers and a sister, named James, Isaac, Joseph and Ellen.  She was the second oldest of the five known children. She had two half-brothers and a half-sister, named Edward, Allan and Betty.
