James was born in 1837 in Westhoughton.1  James' father was William Turner and his mother was Martha Mather.  His paternal grandparents were Isaac Turner and Ann Mather; his maternal grandparents were Edward Mather and Ruth Gregory. He had two brothers and two sisters, named Isaac, Joseph, Sarah and Ellen.  He was the oldest of the five known children. He had two half-brothers and a half-sister, named Edward, Allan and Betty.
