James' father was William Turner and his mother was Martha Mather.  His paternal grandparents were Isaac Turner and Ann Mather; his maternal grandparents were Edward Mather and Ruth Gregory. He had two brothers and a sister, named Isaac, Joseph and Ellen.  He was the oldest of the four known children. He had two half-brothers and a half-sister, named Edward, Allan and Betty.  He died at 3 months old in March 1838 in Westhoughton.¹
