Edward was born in 1826 in Westhoughton.1  Edward's father was Charles Pennington and his mother was Martha Mather.  His maternal grandparents were Edward Mather and Ruth Gregory. He had a brother and a sister, named Allan and Betty.  He was the oldest of the three children. He had three half-brothers and two half-sisters, named James, Isaac, Joseph, Sarah and Ellen.
