Joseph was born in March 1846 in Westhoughton.1  Joseph's father was William Turner and his mother was Martha Mather.  His paternal grandparents were Isaac Turner and Ann Mather; his maternal grandparents were Edward Mather and Ruth Gregory. He had two brothers and a sister, named James, Isaac and Ellen.  He was the youngest of the four known children. He had two half-brothers and a half-sister, named Edward, Allan and Betty.
