Edward was born in 1848 in Westhoughton.1  Edward's father was William Mather and his mother was Margaret Smith.  His paternal grandparents were Geffrey (Jeffery) Mather and Catherine Gregory. He had four brothers and four sisters, named John, Geoffrey, William, Geoffrey, Catherine, Ann, Ann and Margaret.  He was the third oldest of the nine children.
