Geoffrey's father was William Mather and his mother was Margaret Smith.  His paternal grandparents were Geffrey (Jeffery) Mather and Catherine Gregory. He had four brothers and four sisters, named John, Edward, William, Geoffrey, Catherine, Ann, Ann and Margaret.  He was the fifth oldest of the nine children.  He died at the age of 8 in 1859 in Westhoughton.²
