Ann was born in September 1853 in Westhoughton.1  Ann's father was William Mather and her mother was Margaret Smith.  Her paternal grandparents were Geffrey (Jeffery) Mather and Catherine Gregory. She had five brothers and three sisters, named John, Edward, Geoffrey, William, Geoffrey, Catherine, Ann and Margaret.  She was the fourth youngest of the nine children.
