John was born in 1847 in Westhoughton and his baptism took place on April 13th, 1847 at St. Bartholomew (Westhoughton).1 2  John's father was William Mather and his mother was Margaret Smith.  His paternal grandparents were Geffrey (Jeffery) Mather and Catherine Gregory. He had four brothers and four sisters, named Edward, Geoffrey, William, Geoffrey, Catherine, Ann, Ann and Margaret.  He was the second oldest of the nine children.
