Geoffrey's father was Richard Woodward and his mother was Ann Mather.  His maternal grandparents were Geffrey (Jeffery) Mather and Catherine Gregory. He had three brothers and a sister, named William, Richard, Edward and Elizabeth.  He was the oldest of the five known children.  He died at 6 months old in October 1847 in Leigh.  He was buried on October 27th, 1847 in Westhoughton.¹
