Edward was born in 1865 in Westhoughton.  Edward's father was Richard Woodward and his mother was Ann Mather.  His maternal grandparents were Geffrey (Jeffery) Mather and Catherine Gregory. He had three brothers and a sister, named Geoffrey, William, Richard and Elizabeth.  He was the youngest of the five known children.
