Edward's father was Edward Mather and his mother was Ruth Gregory.  His paternal grandparents were William Mather and Alice Aldcroft. He had two brothers and six sisters, named John, Richard, Ruth, Martha, Ellen, Alice, Betty and Ruth.  He was the youngest of the nine children.  He died at the age of 23 in September 1846 in Westhoughton.  He was buried on September 15th, 1846 at St. Bartholomew (Westhoughton).³
