Sarah was born in February 1843 in Newton le Willows and her baptism took place on February 21st, 1843 in Winwick.1 2  Sarah's father was Thomas Mather and her mother was Mary Taylor. She had a brother named Jacob.  She was the younger of the two children. She had a half-sister named Margaret.
