Jessey's father was James Dootson and his mother was Ruth Mather.  His maternal grandparents were Edward Mather and Ruth Gregory. He had eight brothers and a sister, named James, John, William, Joseph, Josiah, Henry, Jesse, Edward and Mary.  He died at the age of 1 in 1850 in Hindley.¹
