Josiah was born in June 1851 in Hindley.1  Josiah's father was James Dootson and his mother was Ruth Mather.  His maternal grandparents were Edward Mather and Ruth Gregory. He had eight brothers and a sister, named James, John, William, Joseph, Jessey, Henry, Jesse, Edward and Mary.
