William was born in June 1841 in Westhoughton.1  William's father was James Dootson and his mother was Ruth Mather.  His maternal grandparents were Edward Mather and Ruth Gregory. He had eight brothers and a sister, named James, John, Joseph, Jessey, Josiah, Henry, Jesse, Edward and Mary.  John and William were twins.
