Joseph was born in 1868 in Atherton.1  Joseph's father was Joseph Mather and his mother was Sarah Ann Owen. He had five brothers and three sisters, named Matthew, John, Joseph, Thomas, William, Eliza, Sarah and Margaret.  He was the third oldest of the nine known children.  He died in 1868.
