Thomas was born in 1876 in Atherton.1  Thomas' father was Joseph Mather and his mother was Sarah Ann Owen. He had five brothers and three sisters, named Matthew, John, Joseph, Joseph, William, Eliza, Sarah and Margaret.  He was the sixth oldest of the nine known children.
