Matthew was born in 1863 in Tyldesley.1  Matthew's father was Joseph Mather (Higginson) and his mother was Sarah Ann Owen.  His paternal grandparents were William Higginson and Mary Mather. He had five brothers and four sisters, named John, Joseph, Joseph, Thomas, William, Eliza, Betsy, Sarah and Margaret.  He was the oldest of the ten known children.
