Matthew was born in 1863 in Tyldesley.1  Matthew's father was Joseph Mather and his mother was Sarah Ann Owen. He had five brothers and three sisters, named John, Joseph, Joseph, Thomas, William, Eliza, Sarah and Margaret.  He was the oldest of the nine known children.
