Mary was born in 1821 in Atherton.1  Mary's father was James Mather and her mother was Elizabeth (Betty) Jameson. She had two brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, John, Margaret and Betty.  She was the third oldest of the five known children.

‌Mary and William were married in a religious ceremony on September 20th, 1846 at St. George (Tyldesley) by Jacob Robson and witnessed by John Jameson & Joseph Hill.2  They had two sons and two daughters, named Joseph, James, Sarah and Eliza.  There are possibly more children.
