Thomas was born in 1815 in Atherton and his baptism took place on April 2nd, 1815 at St. John the Baptist (Atherton).1 2  Thomas' father was James Mather and his mother was Elizabeth (Betty) Jameson. He had a brother and three sisters, named John, Margaret, Mary and Betty.  He was the oldest of the five known children.

‌Thomas and Jane were married in a religious ceremony on April 23rd, 1848 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Leigh).5   They had two biological sons and three biological daughters, named William, James, Ann, Betty and Betty.  They also had an adopted son named Henry.  There are no more children.
