Margaret was born in 1817 in Atherton and her baptism took place on June 15th, 1817 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Leigh).1  Margaret's father was James Mather and her mother was Elizabeth (Betty) Jameson. She had two brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, John, Mary and Betty.  She was the second oldest of the five known children.

‌Margaret and Adam were married in a religious ceremony on July 28th, 1838 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Leigh).2   They had a son named Thomas.
