John was born in June 1884 in Aspull.1  John's father was John Mather and his mother was Elizabeth Heald.  His paternal grandparents were Richard Mather and Mary Leigh. He had four brothers and five sisters, named Richard, Samuel, Edward, Henry, Mary, Maria, Elizabeth, Sarah and Ruth.  He was the youngest of the ten children.
