Mary was born in September 1863 in Birkenhead.1  Mary's father was John Mather and her mother was Elizabeth Heald.  Her paternal grandparents were Richard Mather and Mary Leigh. She had five brothers and four sisters, named Richard, Samuel, Edward, Henry, John, Maria, Elizabeth, Sarah and Ruth.  She was the second oldest of the ten children.
