Ruth's father was John Mather and her mother was Elizabeth Heald. Her paternal grandparents were Richard Mather and Mary Leigh. She had five brothers and four sisters, named Richard, Samuel, Edward, Henry, John, Mary, Maria, Elizabeth and Sarah. She was the nineth oldest of the ten children.
