Wilfred was born in September 1880 in Wigan.1  Wilfred's father was Lawrence Dobson and his mother was Ann Mather.  His maternal grandparents were Joseph Mather and Jane (Ann) Smith. He had a brother and a sister, named Joseph and Mary.  He was the second oldest of the three children. He had a half-sister named Alice.  He died at 6 months old in March 1881 in Wigan.1
