Ellen's father was Thomas Bromilow and her mother was Ann Mather. Her maternal grandparents were John Mather and Betty Woodward. She had seven brothers and two sisters, named Joseph, John, John, Thomas, James, William, George, Betty and Catherine. She was the youngest of the ten children.
