John's father was Thomas Bromilow and his mother was Ann Mather.  His maternal grandparents were John Mather and Betty Woodward. He had six brothers and three sisters, named Joseph, John, Thomas, James, William, George, Betty, Catherine and Ellen.  He was the third oldest of the ten children.  He died as an infant in June 1844 in Horwich.²
