Betty was born in January 1842 in Horwich and her baptism took place on February 20th, 1842 at St. Bartholomew (Westhoughton).1 2  Betty's father was Thomas Bromilow and her mother was Ann Mather.  Her maternal grandparents were John Mather and Betty Woodward. She had seven brothers and two sisters, named Joseph, John, John, Thomas, James, William, George, Catherine and Ellen.  She was the second oldest of the ten children.
