Richard's father was Richard Mather and his mother was Elizabeth Buckley. His paternal grandparents were Robert Mather and Jane (Jenny) Sale. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Edward, James, John, Martha, Ann and Elizabeth. He was the third youngest of the seven children.
