James Mather

James was born in 1827 in Atherton and his baptism took place on January 7th, 1827 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Leigh).¹²

James' father was Richard Mather and his mother was Elizabeth Buckley. His paternal grandparents were Robert Mather and Jane (Jenny) Sale. He had four brothers and two sisters, named Martha, Edward, John, Richard, Ann and Elizabeth. He was the third oldest of the seven children.
