Edward was born in 1825 in Atherton and his baptism took place on January 30th, 1825 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Leigh).1 2  Edward's father was Richard Mather and his mother was Elizabeth Buckley.  His paternal grandparents were Robert Mather and Jane (Jenny) Sale. He had four brothers and two sisters, named Martha, James, John, Richard, Ann and Elizabeth.  He was the second oldest of the seven children.
